Former minister suffers cardiac arrest
Haim Ramon, former Labor Party member who defected to Kadima, rushed to hospital after complaining of chest pains; following catheterization, Ramon's condition said to be good
Former Minister Haim Ramon, 55, was hospitalized at the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv after complaining about chest pains. Tests revealed he had suffered a cardiac arrest.
Ramon underwent a catheterization and his condition was said to be good. He was placed under medical surveillance.
In November, Ramon announced he was leaving the Labor Party and defecting to Kadima. He is positioned in the sixth spot on the party's Knesset list
Kadima's founder and former leader, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, was hospitalized at the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem more than three weeks ago after suffering a serious brain hemorrhage, and is still in a coma.
In the press conference in which he announced his decision to leave Labor and join Kadima, Ramon had praised Sharon as the most suitable man to lead Israel.
“Sharon was ready to risk his post, his political career, and he is ready to take risks in order to achieve what he believes in," he said.
Political shakeup initiator
"There was no act that benefited the State of Israel more than the disengagement. Whoever cannot navigate us into a situation in which we will stop controlling the Palestinian people and understand that controlling them is the problem – may bring a disaster upon us," Ramon added.
Ramon was one of the people behind the political shakeup in Israel and had become closer to Sharon during the disengagement.
"Israeli politics no longer represents anything. Parties do not represent their leadership’s actions, leaders act wholly differently from their movement’s history, and the public often discovers that yesterday’s big rival is today’s greatest partner," Ramon said after announcing his decision to join Kadima.
