Crazy decision. Having driven in Israel, I prefer that English Language Signs which I follow more quickly, refer to the name I am familiar with in English! So if I am looking for the way to "Jerusalem" that's how it should stay. I can understand Arabs being infuriated that place names known to them by their Arabic names will be infuriated by their transliteration in to Hebrew. Hebrew speaking Israelis can refer to the Hebrew place names. This will create confusion and worse still, unnecessary animosity from minority groups.

If we are aspiring to be completely insane let's go through all the way with it and instead of just transliterating the signs let's actually translate them. That will really cause mega-confusion with signs pointing to places like First-of-Zion, Streets, Zion's Miracle, Spring Hill etc etc etc.

Regadless how much Mr. Katz hate arabs or Arabic, Israel has to be true to history. Since this historic piece of land was ruled by Arabs in the past and a considerable arab population still live here, arabic signs should carry the arabic names which are still widely used. So in all fairness, for example, the arabic sign for Nazareth, Jerusalem or Jaffa should use the arabic name which is different that the Hebrew one. Just like in Hebrew where capitals like Amman and Damascus are called Rabat-Amon and Damesek which is different that the arabic name.

...are 1) making the spelling homogenous acoss the country and 2) getting rid of the parenthesis (al-Quds), meaning the Holy, on the Arabic signs for Jerusalem, which now say "Ursalim (al-Quds)". There is no reason why the parenthesis with the religious reference "al-Quds" (the holy) should remain there. It should say respectively Yerushalayim, Ursalim, Jerusalem. Also, English words for places like Jerusalem, Nazareth, Caesarea, Tiberias etc should remain.

English spelling is a joke....have you ever seen a translated birth certificate in English of the Ministry of Interior (Misrad Hapnim)...religion: Jewish....nationality: Jewish ..Since when is Jewish a nationality. Kids in school don't learn how to spell properly. Mr dum tourist is visiting Israel for the first time his travel agent has told him all about these great places to see so he rents a car gets a map and sets off. He can't read a word of hebrew but he does know the names of the places he wants to go based on books he has read and his tour map. Decides he wanrts to visit the famous town of Nazareth so he is checking all the signs looking for one that says Nazareth this way but he nether sees it. He sees a sign saying Natsrat this was but Natsrat isn't something an english speaking tourist is going to even click might be Nazeath. He wants to visit the Dead Sea will that say Yam Hamelach in english? Jerusalem why not say JERUSALEM in english which is how english speakers have been taught its spelled not Yerushalayim and certainly not Al Quads. I know about dodgy signs I seen it all the time and at first before I learned hebrew i did find it confusing seeing all the different english translations so I agree a uniform spelling is needed but not trying to translate the hebrew and then writing the hebrew word in english.
